FYI

Reading: Today we read the story "Ten Dogs in the Window." This book focused on the beginning and ending sounds of n, p, and f. We also practiced building our stamina while reading to someone. Be sure to ask your child about how we "Read to Someone."

Math: Today we practiced counting by 2s, and 5s, and writing tallies on our dry erase boards. Your child is bringing home a Unit 1 math review. Please go over this with your child and return to school tomorrow.

Science: Today we observed three different kinds or rocks in water. The kids used great words to describe the rocks, like smooth, rough, hard, bumpy, crystals, and light.

Today we also made bird feeders to hang on the tree outside of our classroom. We are going to watch the birds get ready for fall and winter.

Science News

Today we began an earth science unit. We will be studying rock, one of the most important earth materials. Our investigations will center on the properties and uses of rock in many of its particle sizes-pebbles, gravel, sand, silt, and clay. The children will be working extensively with materials, observing, comparing, and communicating what they learn through their firsthand experiences with earth materials.

DOL: This week we began our first Daily Oral Language. Your child will bring home this packet on Fridays. Please be aware that the DOL has not been checked. We do these activities together and I am expecting that the kids have the answers correct.

Reading: Today we finished up our week one activity packet. It focused on the beginning and ending sounds of m, s, t, and c. Please look for this in your child's SPORTS book.

Math: Today we practiced writing number stories using our dry erase boards together as a class. Then the kids made a number story of their own.

Social Studies: We are continuing to talk about rules and why they are important for our country and for our classroom. Each child made a page about why rules are important in our classroom for a class book.

Next week we will begin our first Science Unit on Pebbles, Sand and Silt. Look for information in your child's SPORTS book.

Have a great weekend!

Math: Homelink 1.12
Wall Words: Practice your words tonight

ABC's of Golf

A former parent of mine from Pembroke is also a local author and she provided our entire class with an autographed copy of her book "ABCs of Golf." Please be sure to ask you child about his/her book.

Friendship Salad

Today we made a friendship salad. The salad was filled with fruit and goodies. Each part of the salad had a special meaning:

Big Bowl: What our Classroom Needs
Cantelope: Kind kids helping each other, taking turns, etc.
Grapes: Hard Workers
Strawberries: Sharing Kids
Marshmallows: Kind Words said in the room like please, thank you and I'm sorry
Yogurt: Happiness we feel at school

We decided not to put a rotten banana in our salad becuase a rotten banana could cause trouble in our room, call names, does not share and refuses to do school work.
